Brunch Review: Table 17
Cross Posted to Eat My City
Easter Sunday rolled around the corner and that meant brunch was in the offering. Leslieville is our preferred destination for an early afternoon breakfast, if for no other reason than it’s a convenient walk from our Corktown dwelling. Having recently taken a break from our standard place, Bonjour Brioche, in favour of Sophie Mon Petit Café, we decided to continue our exploration of the Leslieville brunch scene, due west of Brioche, at Table 17.
We were promptly seated by our server in a tavern-like room with funky chandeliers, quirky wooden chairs, an exposed wood wall and the ubiquitous communal table. Some kind of country music was playing, but thankfully at a volume that I barely noticed it. (Maybe it wasn’t country…I tend to tune out vocal music…in any case, it was pleasant).
The menu has something on it for everyone and is simple enough to give you assurances that the kitchen is focused on quality: weekly scrambled eggs; poached eggs, farmer’s breakfast, club sandwich, niçoise, quiche, french toasts, yogurt, and fried eggs all make an appearance.
My wife ordered the weekly scramble, mixed with chorizo sausage. In her own words, “the eggs were moist, and the sausage added nice flavour to the dish. The side toast (made of french white bread) was nicely buttered, and the whole dish didn’t taste heavy or greasy.”
I opted for the club sandwich, which contained a healthy (and by healthy, I mean hearty) amount of Cumbrae’s bacon, watercress, and truffle mayo, served with a side salad. If you like bacon (which I do), it’s the perfect club. The bacon really steals the show, relegating everything else to the backbenches. I forgot there was poultry in my sandwich; I could barely taste the truffle mayo (but I did get hints of it, which is the best you can ask for, I guess); but the watercress was a nice touch. The side salad was nothing special – just your typical mixed greens and light vinaigrette.
Our friend ordered the neapolitan eggs, poached in “lightly stewed” tomatoes and basil, served on a country toast. I didn’t ask him for detailed tasting notes, but at the end of the meal, he said it was very good. Service was friendly and efficient, and the cost reasonable. (Three dishes, two americanos, one latté and one OJ came out to $45 before tax and tip).We all enjoyed our meal and vowed to return again. Table 17 is worth a visit if you’re in the area, and most definitely worth making the trip to Leslieville for. Well priced, great service, cool space, damn good food.
